Major Overhaul Services Gas Turbine

IMG_6566

At MFS, we deliver comprehensive major overhaul services for both Heavy Duty and Aeroderivative gas turbines. Major overhauls are conducted based on running hours or equipment condition, aligning with OEM recommendations or custom inspection schedules, comparable to combustion and hot gas path inspections, but tailored to turbine type and configuration.

On Site or Workshop

Heavy Duty gas turbines are serviced on-site.
Aeroderivative gas turbines are overhauled at the MFS workshop in the Netherlands, equipped for full tear-down, diagnostics, and refurbishment.

Both routes follow a customized and mutually agreed scope, ensuring inspections meet your asset’s design and operational needs.
per inspections.

Inspection scope

The Major Overhaul includes inspections and repairs concerning the sections:
• Compressor
• Combustion
• Turbine

Procedure Major Overhaul

The procedure of a Major Overhaul is:
• Incoming inspection
• Disassembly into modules
• Modular disassembly to piece part level
• Cleaning and inspection (Visual, NDT and Dimensional if required)
• Module assembly
• Final engine assembly
• Testing

Additional

Package Inspection
Beyond the engine, auxiliary systems (fuel, lube oil, cooling), instrumentation, enclosures, and start-up equipment are surveyed to ensure full reliability during restart.

Site project execution
Includes planning, tooling rental, site leadership, control system retrofits, and field balancing—all backed by consulting and skilled engineer deployment.

Pre-Outage Survey & Package Review

Before any removal or workshop dispatch, our engineers conduct a comprehensive survey of the entire gas turbine package:

  • Inspect related systems—auxiliaries, enclosures, control systems and mounting interfaces.
  • Identify potential issues like wear, misalignment, or cooling/heater faults that could compromise restart.
  • Ensure full performance restoration post overhaul with minimal surprises during commissioning

Typical Timing & Triggers

  • Scheduled at Time Between Overhauls intervals—commonly defined by OEM, usage profiles, and performance trends.
  • Or use pattern (e.g. base load vs frequent starts/stops), fuel (type and air quality), and NOₓ control methods all affect inspection schedules and maintenance intervals.
  • May also be initiated based on condition or triggering events, like abnormal thermal excursions, performance degradation, or major control system alarms.

Minimizing Downtime: Engine Lease Program

For uninterrupted operation during overhaul, particularly with Aeroderivatives, MFS offers access to our Engine Lease Pool. This allows you to continue operation with a lease-engine while your unit is serviced, avoiding extended plant downtime and costly interruptions.
